Of the 997 players who registered for the IPL 2020 auction only 332 players have been shortlisted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This list is made up of 186 Indian players (out of which only 13 are capped) and 146 foreign players. Among the overseas players, it is the Australians who have shown the maximum interest among the franchises as 35 of their players have been shortlisted. The Aussies are followed by South Africa and England, with 23 and 22 players respectively. The Windies have 19 of their players shortlisted, while the Kiwis (NZ) have only 18. Out of the three Indian neighboring countries who play the IPL, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have shown the lowest interest and if we total the players from these three countries, only 26 players have been shortlisted.
Robin Uthappa is the only capped Indian player with the highest base price of 2 Crores this year after being released by the Kolkata Knight Riders. In the pool of overseas players, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood, Chris Lynn, Mitchel Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Dale Steyn and Angelo Mathews have been shortlisted at the highest base price of 2 Crores each. Piyush Chawla, Yusuf Pathan and Jaydev Unadkat follow closely with base prices of 1 Crore each.

All the 8 franchises are gearing up for the auction on 19th December 2019 in Kolkata and it is the Kings XI Punjab who are going in with the highest purse worth of INR 42 Crores (required to buy 9 players including 4 international players). The Kolkata Knight Riders are next in line with the second highest purse value of 35 Crores with 4 overseas players to bid for. Third in line are the Royals from Rajasthan looking to again acquire 4 new overseas players with about 29 Crores in their kitty. The Delhi Capitals need 5 international players with 27 Crores as their purse value. Time to move west to the Mumbai Indians who need only 2 overseas players and 13 Crores to go in their bank. Heading south, the Sunrisers Hyderabad seem low on cash with 17 Crores and 2 overseas players yet to join them. Moving to the other royal team, Bangalore, need 6 overseas players for the completion of their team with 27 Crores to spend. Finally, the Super Kings of Chennai need only 2 international players with as low as 14 Crores to spend.
With a total budget of 207.65 Crores available among all franchises, it’s time to see who the gavel gets tapped for and who goes unsold? Let’s see if the auction is in line with the assumptions that I have made for this IPL 2020!
Going once, going twice, No…HOLD!!! 😉
